Collection Drive for Haiti's Injured and Disabled

Monday, January 18, 2010 by Walking Free

Physicians for Peace, which has been providing amputee rehabilitation services in Haiti since 2005, is sponsoring a drive to collect prosthetics, wheelchairs, walkers, canes and crutches for victims of the Haiti earthquake.

Saturday, January 23, 1:00 - 4:00 p.m.

Old Dominion University - Webb Center

49th Street, Norfolk, VA

ODU students and Physicians for Peace (PFP) volunteers will be collecting the donations, refurbishing as necessary and then sending to Physicians for Peaces’s rehabilitation centers in Port-au-Prince.

“We will be sending this equipment by container to be used when the critical relief activities are near completion,” said Mary Kwasniewski, Physicians for Peace’s Senior Director for Global Health.  “Then, we’ll work directly with our two primary partners there, Healing Hands for Haiti and St. Vincent’s Orphanage, who we know will be seeing an increase in amputee victims resulting from this tragedy.”

During the drive, cash donations will be accepted, however, donations of other equipment, clothing, etc, cannot be accepted.

This drive is part of PFP’s “Walking Free” program, recognized around the world for providing prosthetics and other devices as well as training to prosthetists and physical therapists to help amputees live fully productive lives.

Dear sirs, I Live in Central New York and would like to help with this drive. Unfortunately I am not sure I would be able to get them to ODU. If I were to ask around and get a collection going up here how late would you be willing to accept donations and is there a possibility we could ship stuff to you? I work for a non-profit and we have a basement full of this stuff and people are always bringing us more.

Whilst I have every sympathy with the Haitians it should be remembered that equipment, aids, prosthetics etc supplied by the NHS in Great Britain remain the property of the NHS and persons in receipt of them are not at liberty to donate them

I saw on the TV this morning that your organization is collecting various needed items for the people of Haiti. A few months ago I broke my ankle and now have a what I call a hard walking cast. It is the type that has a inflatable support system. The cast isin real good shape, however I have lost the part that you insert that you hand pump to help it inflate. My question is 1) Do you need it and 2) If so, how can I get it to you. I live in Gloucetser, Va and dont have the time to driveit to Norfolk.

I did not hear about your drive at ODU until the late news last evening. Will you be having another drive or is there a drop off point? I work M-F, 8-5, but would be happy to drop off. Thank you!!

Please provide info on your website- we are turning to you as Heather Mills highlighted the problem and gave you a huge plug. You need to provide information for people as to what they can do out side of your local area- someone needs to take this up- organize it- alot of good will is going wasted. Why not get UPS involved and have them waive fees- for all donations going to be shipped nationwide to you!!! I am trying to find a place to donate locally- my crutches canes are still sitting in my closet. Look forward to feedback.
